William W. Mullins

March 5, 1927 - April 22, 2001


Prof. William W. Mullins was a member of the Materials Science and Engineering Faculty at Carnegie Mellon University from 1960 until 2001. Mullins was widely known in the materials science community for his ground breaking work in the areas of capillarity-induced surface morphologies, dendrite formation during solidification, the thermodynamics of crystalline solids, grain boundary motion, and grain growth. Among his friends and colleagues, he was also known for his wide ranging scientific interests, his ability to communicate complex theories with great clarity, and his staunch support for social causes. The W.W. Mullins Chair was endowed in 2001.
