Albert Einstein

“He was the pre-eminent scientist in a century dominated by science. The touchstones of the era — the Bomb, the Big Bang, quantum physics and electronics — all bear his imprint.”

As the school year begins, there will be many times Albert Einstein will be referenced in the news media.

He is being nominated as Times Man of the Century. You can reference the web site below

Dr. Allen Janis, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Pittsburgh, wrote an article in the American Journal of Physics,  March 1983, explaining Einstein’s Theory. The article entitled “Simultaneity and special relativistic kinematics”, gives an excellent explanation, understandable for the high school level, with you the teacher as a critical aide. This article is worth looking up, as a preparation for the questions that may occur by your students, during this year as we honor this great scientist.

Back to School

Another summer is coming to an end, means the start of a new educational season is beginning. It may be this time of the year the teachers begin to review their teaching curriculum, teaching techniques and adjust them for the new school year. Like a coach, the play book needs to be adjusted with some innovative tweaks to introduce a new approach for the upcoming season. A web site that could be used in the science area is

http://highschoolhub.org/hub/hub.cfm . It could be a plus.

Survey

Notices will be sent out for the updating of the surveys from all participants. This survey can be filled out on line at this web site.

Scientists Spot Doughnut-Shaped Cloud With a Black Hole Filling

An international team of scientists has found more evidence that massive black holes are surrounded by a doughnut-shaped gas cloud which, depending on our line of sight, blocks the view of the black hole in the center.

Dr. Francine Papillion

Dr. Francine Papillion has been very helpful the past two summers, being actively involved with the high school teacher’s projects. Being a junior faculty member and a post-doctorate at CMU,

Dr. Francine Papillion has been helping Dr. Rohrer with his NSF activities. Dr. Rohrer still remains actively involved with each high school teacher’s project, but when absent or unavailable,               Dr. Papillion has filled in maintaining continuity needed for a successful project completion.
