Grant Renewal

In February 2003, Dr. Rohrer hosted a conclave of dignitaries who represented the National Science Foundation. These individuals arrived at Carnegie Mellon to hear about the various activities sponsored by the NSF funds received in the past and to determine whether further funding should be warranted. Ms. Roxanne Pearsall spoke before these dignitaries explaining her work in ceramics during the summer 2002. Ms. Pearsall is a chemistry teacher and department head at CAPA in the Pittsburgh Public School System.

                           Dr. Rohrer

Rohrer

Dr. Rohrer has been the catalyst to the summer internship for high school teachers. Incorporating the high school teacher in his NSF Grant proposal, Dr. Rohrer recognized that these individuals would be the instructors who initially introduce the high school students to various Material Science Topics. To assist these science teachers of physics and chemistry, Dr. Rohrer has included in his NSF Grant the opportunity for the high school teacher to create a laboratory experience or a curricula that enhances a Material Science Topic that would be incorporated into the teacher’s high school curriculum. This opportunity offers a stipend to the teacher and has a $1000 budget for the creation of the lab or curricula.

Survey

Thank you to all of you who had completed and submitted the surveys mailed out last fall. The data was used in Dr. Rohrerís presentation to the NSF committed. The results of the survey will be published in a later issue.
