"Deformation Behavior of Magnesium Alloys and Single Crystals"

Professor Kwang Seon Shin

Director Research Institute of Advanced Materials

Magnesium Technology Innovation Center, Seoul National University

Abstract

In recent years, there have been attempts to improve the formability of wrought Mg alloys by controlling their microstructure and texture with various alloying elements and processing conditions. In the present study, changes were examined in the deformation texture of Mg alloys with various compositions that were extruded at different temperatures. The effects of the alloying elements and the extrusion temperatures on the textures of the extruded Mg alloys were examined systematically using X-ray diffraction and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analyses. It was found that the textures and mechanical properties of extruded Mg alloys were strongly affected by the alloying elements and processing conditions.

The mechanical behavior of HCP metals is strongly influenced by their inherent anisotropic characteristics that originate from the crystal structure. The resolved shear stresses that activate the prismatic, pyramidal and <c+a> slip modes are much greater than those required to initiate the basal slip and tensile twin at room temperature. Therefore, the predominant deformation modes at room temperature are the basal slip and the tensile twin. While the slip behavior of Mg alloys has been extensively investigated, the effects of the twin on the deformation behavior of Mg single crystals has not been thoroughly examined yet, even though twinning is an important mode of deformation in HCP metals. The interactions between dislocations and twin boundaries are important because the deformation-induced twins could act as obstacles to dislocation motion. In this study, the effects of the twin on the deformation behavior of Mg single crystals were systematically investigated.

Spring 2009

ASM Materials Camp for Teachers

On June 22-26, local Pittsburgh –area teachers participated in a summer camp at the MRSEC at Carnegie Mellon University. The five-day camp was co-sponsored by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) Foundation, in conjunction with the ASM Materials Education Foundation, the Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST) Foundation, and the ASM Pittsburgh Chapter. During the camp, the teachers learned the basics of materials science as taught at the high school level, through a series of lectures, demonstrations and hands-on lab activities. They worked with metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, helping to develop a greater appreciation for the importance of these materials to everyday life. The camp also included a field trip to the labs of the Art Conservation Research Center, where they learned about how materials research is a part of art conservation.

The 15th International Conference on Textured of Materials (ICOTOM) conference was held at Carnegie Mellon University in June 2008. This conference brings together a substantial international community of scientists and engineers who share an interest in the development of our understanding of texture in materials, its experimental characterization, influence on materials properties, and description by models. It is held every three years and this past year it attracted 300 attendees from around the world. Anthony D. Rollett, a professor in the CMU MRSEC served as the conference chair. The proceedings of the conference are now published in Ceramic Transactions – volumes 1 and 2.
