MRSEC 2010 SUMMER SCHOOL
| MRSEC Summer School 2010 |
| Methods for 3D Microstructural Studies |
The MRSEC will host a Summer School in June 2010 to introduce members of the technical community to the methods developed by the MRSEC. The mission of the MIMP (Mesoscale Interface Mapping Project) is to understand the mechanistic origins of the grain boundary character distribution, a five-dimensional materials specific quantity, and its influence on the macroscopic properties and performance of polycrystalline materials. Our integrated program of theory, experiment, and simulation leverages the skills of scientists and engineers from multiple disciplines.
Program Highlights
The MIMP Summer School will focus on the characterization of 3D microstructures and grain boundary properties, quantifying and predicting microstructural evolution, and linking materials properties to microstructures.
The school will combine lectures taught by the MRSEC Faculty and hands-on exercises using the facilities at CMU. Four main topics will be addressed: 1) Analysis of EBSD serial section data, 2) Microstructure Builder for generating synthetic 3D digital microstructures, 3) ACT system for orientation mapping in the TEM and 4) Synchrotron radiation for 3D microstructure mapping.
A welcome reception will be held in the evening on June 1st and the main workshop activities will be held June 2nd-4th.
Organizers: A.D. Rollett, K. Barmak, G.S. Rohrer & R. Suter
