The summer break provides a time for undergraduates
to conduct in depth research in the CMU MRSEC.
During the summer of 2006, we directed 13 undergraduate
research projects. This included three students
from FAMU/FSU (PREM) College of engineering,
two students from the College of Engineering
at Cal State Northridge, one student from Northwestern
University, one student from Northwestern University
and six students from CMU.
The summer begins with a project selection and
lab safety training. Each student conducts research
under the guidance of the senior project participants.
After five weeks, a symposium is held where all
the students present brief oral reports on their
project goals, progress to date, and plans for
the second half of the summer. The summer concludes
with final oral reports in a second symposium;
each student also produces a written summary
and answers a questionnaire. The internship is
also punctuated by additional education activities
such as mini-courses taught by our faculty and
staff, seminars series and visit of facilities.
The projects from the summer of 2006 are listed
below illustrated with pictures taken during
the final symposium.
